Encountering a Bizarre Sight: A Deer Walking on Two Legs in the Forest

A Strange Observation

One day, while spending time in the forest, I came across a truly bizarre sight. I noticed a deer walking on two legs instead of its usual four. It was an unexpected and peculiar sight that immediately caught my attention.

As I stood there, observing the deer, I couldn’t help but wonder if there were other deer nearby. Typically, deer travel in groups, so it seemed unusual for this particular deer to be alone. If no other deer appeared, it would suggest that this one was practicing its unique way of walking independently.

The Unusual Behavior of Fighting Does

Interestingly, this encounter reminded me of another strange behavior exhibited by does when they fight each other. When engaged in combat, does will stand on their hind legs and charge at each other, attempting to knock down their opponent. This behavior is quite fascinating and not commonly known.

I recall witnessing such a fight late one night during my time living in the wild Northern Coast Range of California many years ago. A group of does gathered in a meadow and arranged themselves in a large circle with an empty space within. They would then take turns charging into that space and trying to knock over any other doe doing the same thing.

The scene became even more peculiar when I shined a light towards them, causing their eyes to glow in the darkness as they continued their unique dance. While I never discovered why they exhibited such behavior, it felt like an exclusive event from which I was excluded.

Deer’s Quirks and Comparisons

Deer have always been known for their eccentricities; however, witnessing one walking on two legs did not surprise me enough to consider it impossible or shocking. The idea of deer walking upright is reminiscent of the European concept of a wendigo, a malevolent forest spirit in Native American legend. According to folklore, wendigos could possess individuals and turn them into cannibals.

If I were to encounter such a creature, I admit that I would be taken aback. Nevertheless, deer’s peculiar behaviors have made me realize that they can indeed exhibit oddities beyond what we typically expect from them.

In conclusion, my encounter with the deer walking on two legs was an unusual sight but not entirely surprising considering the quirks and behaviors exhibited by these creatures. While it may seem strange at first glance, it is important to remember that nature often surprises us with its diversity and unique characteristics.

Unexpected Discovery: Witnessing a Deer Walking Upright in the Woods

A Strange Encounter

One day while walking through the woods, I stumbled upon a peculiar sight. As I stood still and observed, I noticed a lone deer standing on its hind legs. It was an unusual sight to behold, as deer are known for their graceful movements on all fours. Curiosity piqued, I decided to watch and see if any other deer would join this strange behavior.

The Lone Practitioner

To my surprise, no other deer appeared. It seemed that this particular deer was practicing its upright stance alone. Did you know that when deer, particularly does, engage in fights with each other, they rise up on their hind legs and charge at each other? This behavior is an attempt to knock down their opponent and establish dominance.

A Nighttime Spectacle

Recalling a similar incident from years ago when I lived in the wilds of Northern Coast Range in California, the memory of a group of does fighting in a meadow resurfaced. On that night, they formed a large group with an empty space within it. These does would take turns charging into that space on their hind legs, attempting to topple any fellow deer doing the same.

Eyes Glowing in the Dark

Intrigued by this bizarre display, I shined a light towards them. The darkness made it even more surreal as their eyes lit up like beacons. However, despite my curiosity about their unusual behavior, it remained unclear why they were engaging in such actions. It felt like an exclusive party to which I was not invited or privy to its purpose.

Deer Can Be Unpredictable

While witnessing these odd behaviors among deer may seem strange enough, it is not enough to surprise me to see them walking on two legs. Such a notion aligns more with the European concept of a wendigo, a malevolent forest spirit from Native American legend. Wendigos were believed to possess men and turn them into cannibals. However, deer, even in their peculiar ways, are unlikely to exhibit such extraordinary behavior.

In conclusion, encountering a deer walking upright in the woods was an unexpected discovery that left me fascinated and puzzled. Deer’s behaviors can be strange at times, but not to the extent of walking on two legs like mythical creatures. This encounter served as a reminder of the mysteries and wonders that nature holds, even within familiar surroundings.

A Strange Sight in the Meadow

One evening, while living in a remote area of the Northern Coast Range of California, I witnessed an extraordinary sight in the meadow. A group of does was engaged in a peculiar behavior – they were fighting each other. It was unusual to see deer engaging in such aggressive behavior, especially at night. The does were arranged in a large group with an empty space within, and they would get up on their hind legs and charge into that space, attempting to knock down any other deer doing the same. Did you know that when female deer (does) fight each other, they stand on their hind legs and run towards each other? Their goal is to knock down their opponent who is likely to lose the fight. This information added another layer of curiosity to my observation that night.

In conclusion, witnessing these fighting does provided an unforgettable experience for me in the wilds of California’s Northern Coast Range. Although their behavior remained mysterious and unexplained, it deepened my appreciation for the quirks and peculiarities of nature’s creatures.

5 Best .308 Winchester Semi-Auto Rifles

0

When .223 Remington just won’t do it, many turn to the venerable .308 Winchester. The classic “battle rifle” is a term dedicated to semi-automatic rifles chambered in a full-power rifle caliber — typically the .308 Win. The .308 Winchester often offers the extra performance needed compared to the .223 Remington, and provides shooters with the upper hand.

Whether it’s for fun at the range or in preparation for a SHTF scenario, here are the top five .308 Winchester semi-auto rifles that you can bet your life on.

Why Choose a .308 Battle Rifle?

There are several reasons to choose a .308 Winchester semi-auto rifle over something chambered in a lesser caliber. The two main reasons being superior ballistics and increased effective range. For example, when looking at two comparable Federal loads with a FMJ BT projectile, we see that a 62-grain .223 Remington has a velocity of 3,020 fps and produces 1,255 ft/lbs of energy, while a 150-grain .308 Winchester has a velocity of 2,820 fps and produces 2,648 ft/lbs of energy. This means that, on average, your rifle chambered in .308 Winchester will produce over twice the amount of energy as your standard .223 Remington rifle.

Additionally, the .308 Winchester has a max effective range of roughly 1,000 yards according to the USMC, while the .223 Remington only has a max effective range of around 600 yards. This allows shooters, with proper marksmanship fundamentals and abilities, to put more distance between them and a threat.

In a SHTF or bug-out situation, you could also use a .308 rifle to hunt a wide variety of game. This could be beneficial for survival with the right skills and conditions in place.

Cons of Using .308

Though there are a number of reasons to choose a .308 Winchester semi-auto rifle over something chambered in 5.56 NATO, there are also some cons. The primary impairment will be weight — rifle weight, loaded magazines, and spare ammo will all be heavier. If you are going to be carrying a full loadout for an extended time period or distance, the extra weight exacts a toll on the body. It can also account for limitations on the amount of additional gear you would otherwise be able to carry.

The increased power of the .308 cartridge comes with an increase in recoil, muzzle blast, and report. This makes the rifle harder to fire accurately and can slow down follow-up shots. It can also have a negative effect on your vision or hearing when firing in certain environments, such as indoors or at night, due to the excess concussion and muzzle flash.

You will also have a reduced capacity compared to a 5.56 rifle, moving from a standard 30-round magazine to a 20-round mag. You can find extended .308 magazines, but you will still be dealing with the additional weight and lower capacity compared to extended 5.56 mags.

1. Smith & Wesson M&P10 Sport

Starting off the list as the most budget-friendly option, the Smith & Wesson M&P10 is an AR-10 platform .308 Winchester rifle. This provides shooters with good parts compatibility for upgrading or replacing accessories and components. Constructed of durable 7075-T6 upper and lower receivers, the M&P10 is capable of taking a beating. The 16-inch barrel provides excellent accuracy while keeping the rifle lightweight and maneuverable at only about 6.5 lbs.

The Sport variant comes with a standard A2 handguard, pistol grip, and stock, but the rifle is also available in different configurations depending on your preferences. Overall, the M&P10 Sport allows shooters to get into a quality .308 Winchester semi-auto rifle without breaking the bank.

2. DS Arms SA58 FAL

Introduced in 1946 and dubbed “the right arm of the free world,” the FAL is a well-known .308 battle rifle. The DS Arms SA58 provides an improved version of the original FAL with the inclusion of an M-Lok handguard for attaching accessories, top rail for mounting optics, adjustable side-folding stock, enhanced ambidextrous magazine release, and extended cocking handle knob. Additionally, the rifle features a 16-inch medium-contour fluted barrel and is equipped with an elevation adjustable front sight post along with a quick-adjust dual aperture rear sight.

DS Arms also offers a standard version of the SA58 with an 18-inch barrel and standard furniture that is more in line with a traditional FAL. All parts of the DS Arms SA58 are high-quality and made in the USA.

3. Springfield M1A SOCOM 16

The Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM 16 is the highest evolution of the trusted M1A/M14 series of rifles. The SOCOM 16 model features a 16.25-inch barrel for a more compact and maneuverable overall package. The SOCOM variant of the M1A also incorporates an optic mount, as well as an XS Sights tritium front sight post with an enlarged military aperture ghost ring rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation. The M1A includes a 10-round magazine, but 20-round magazines are available. If classic wood and steel is more your style, take a look at the standard M1A.

4. IWI Tavor 7

The IWI Tavor 7 is unique, in that it features a bullpup design. Bullpup rifles move the action to the rear of the firearm. This makes for a more compact rifle, even with the 16.5-inch barrel length. The Tavor is highly regarded as a durable and dependable rifle — partially due to the short-stroke gas piston design with a rotating closed bolt.

The Tavor 7 incorporates an ambidextrous safety lever, magazine release, and bolt catch. Additionally, the charging handle and ejection side can be reversed, making this a great choice for both right and left-handed shooters.

5. FN SCAR 17S

One of the most well-known .308 Winchester semi-auto rifles is the FN SCAR 17S. The .308 SCAR comes in two configurations, a shorter version with a 16-inch free-float barrel called the 17S, and a longer version with a 20-inch barrel called the 20S. Purpose-built for long-range shooting, the short-stroke gas piston system efficiently absorbs recoil for greater precision and faster follow-up shots.

The SCAR features an ambidextrous safety lever, magazine release, and a charging handle that mounts on the right or left side. Further, the SCAR utilizes a telescoping, side-folding polymer stock with an adjustable cheek piece allowing the rifle to be fitted to the shooter.

Honorable Mention: IWI Galil Ace

The Galil Ace is often looked at as a sort of modernized and upgraded AK-47. Typically chambered in 7.62x39mm, there is also a .308 Winchester version of the Galil. It features a 16.5-inch chrome-lined, cold hammer forged barrel and utilizes a 20-round magazine. When compared to the AK, the reciprocating charging handle has been moved to the left side of the milled steel receiver, allowing for weak hand operation.

The Galil features a closed rotating bolt, long-stroke gas piston system that makes it incredibly reliable. Additionally, the rifle features adjustable iron sights with a tritium front post and a two-dot tritium rear aperture. However, the Galil Ace also incorporates a full-length top rail to mount an optic. An adjustable, side-folding stock makes for easy storage and transportation, and allows the shooter to fit the rifle to the desired length of pull.

Conclusion: Best .308 Winchester Rifles

Sometimes having a full-power battle rifle is just what the doctor prescribed. They shoot farther, hit harder, and have a distinct feel that no standard AR-15 can match. So, if you’ve decided that a semi-auto .308 rifle is for you, any of the options on this list are sure to serve you well.

How to Spool a Spinning Reel

0

This is true even with Lew’s superior spinning rods and reels and Strike King’s premium Tour Grade fishing lines.

String the reel wrong and you’ll be plagued with line twist, short casts and poor sensitivity. Do it right and you’ll get the superior performance you expect from every Lew’s reel.

SHOP FISHING LINE

Fluorocarbon and Monofilament Lines

Spinning reels perform at their best with fluorocarbon and monofilament lines no heavier than 8-pound test. A heavier line doesn’t flow through the guides as smoothly, which reduces casting distance and efficiency.

First run the fishing line from its spool through the first guide above the reel. Then open the reel’s bail and tie the line to its spool with an Arbor knot. After tying the knot, close the bail and you are set to begin winding.

The Flat Spool Method

Lay the line’s spool on whichever side allows the line to come off of it counterclockwise. If the line comes off clockwise it will twist. As you wind the reel, run the line through your fingers below the guide and apply firm pressure.

Stop after 15 cranks or so and release the line in your fingers. If the line is limp and without twist, continue winding. If the line twists around itself, the wrong side of the spool is facing up. Flip the spool over and resume cranking. Double check the line for twist after another 15 cranks.

The Upright Spool Method

Another option is to set the line spool in some type of holder so that it sits upright on edge, or use the Strike King Sidewinder tool that comes in every package of Tour Grade Line. The line should come off the top of the spool and straight through the guide. Here again, apply finger pressure to the line as you wind.

Tour Grade Spool Thumbnail

When to Stop Winding

The reel is full when the line comes to within about 1/8-inch of the spool’s outer edge. Stopping short of this will reduce casting distance and the reel’s speed. If you fill the reel to the very edge of the spool, bird’s nests are inevitable.

Spooling Braided Line

Because braided line has no memory, it will not twist if you lay the spool flat on either side or use the upright spool method. However, braided line is so slick that it will slip on the reel’s spool regardless of the knot you use. You must first attach a length of monofilament or fluorocarbon to the reel’s spool and knot it to the braid.

Braid is so much thinner at the same diameter than monofilament or fluorocarbon that it takes up less room on the spool. Consider backing the spool with a less expensive monofilament so you don’t use more braid than you need.

The advantages of braided line are so numerous that top pros, including Oklahoma’s Andrew Upshaw, use it almost exclusively.

“Since braided line doesn’t stretch, it is super sensitive and delivers much better hook sets,” Upshaw said. “I love Strike King’s Tour Grade yellow braid because I can see it so well.”

A gossamer braid never becomes springy, so it allows for longer casts, especially with light finesse lures. You can also use a stronger line if you wish. Many pros opt for 15-pound braid.

Once you’ve got your spinning reel spooled up and have taken it fishing a few times, make sure you know how to clean and maintain it!

These interactions often occur in rural or suburban areas where both species coexist. The reasons behind this unique connection are not fully understood, but some theories suggest that it could be due to a shared environment or mutual curiosity.

One possible explanation is that cats and deer share a common prey base. Both animals are known to hunt small rodents and insects, which could lead to them crossing paths while searching for food. Additionally, cats are known for their curious nature, and they may approach deer out of interest or playfulness.

Unusual Playmates

In some cases, cats and deer have been observed engaging in playful behavior together. This can include chasing each other around yards or open fields, much like the fawn with the pit bull mentioned earlier. It is important to note that these interactions should be monitored to ensure the safety of both animals involved.

It is fascinating to witness such different species engage in friendly play. However, it is crucial to remember that these interactions should not be forced or encouraged. Animals should always be allowed to interact on their own terms, with minimal human interference.

Maintaining Caution

While some cats and deer may form a unique bond, it is essential to exercise caution when encountering wildlife. Deer are wild animals and should be treated as such. Approaching them too closely or attempting physical contact can cause stress and potentially dangerous situations for both humans and animals.

Similarly, pet owners should ensure the safety of their cats when allowing them outside near deer habitats. While some interactions may appear harmless, it is important to remember that wild animals can act unpredictably.

In conclusion, the bond between cats and deer is a fascinating phenomenon. While it may not be common, there have been instances where these two species have formed unexpected alliances. However, it is crucial to approach wildlife with caution and respect their boundaries to ensure the well-being of both animals involved.

In conclusion, the affinity between cats and deer can be attributed to their shared instinctual curiosity, gentle nature, and mutual respect for personal space. While their interactions may seem unconventional, it is a testament to the unique and unexpected connections that can be formed in the animal kingdom.

10 Best Orange Hunting Vests for Deer, Upland (& Dogs!)

Best Orange Hunting Vests for Deer, Upland (& Dogs!) of 2024

Just because you might be legally required to wear an orange hunting vest for the 2024 deer, elk, big game, or upland hunting season doesn’t mean that vest shouldn’t also be useful.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a close look at all different types of safety vests from around the internet to help you find the best for your needs. We found a wide array of camo, reversible, fleece, insulated, and even orange vests for dogs that all fit specific needs and hunting styles.

Some of the more straightforward options have just a few pockets, while others have blood-proof game pouches on the back for you to stash your small game haul. No matter your specific type of hunting, you’ll find a blaze orange vest on this list to keep you moving quietly, highly visible, and ultra-organized.

Because the best hunting brands make the best orange hunting vests, you can expect all the big names here, including Under Armour, Sitka, and Primos. But you’ll also find some high-quality gear from brands that might not immediately ring a bell, too.

Now let’s get ready to rumble.

Best Overall Orange Hunting Vest Sitka Ballistic

Our pick for the best orange hunting vest on the 2024 market is the Sitka Ballistic. It isn’t the most full-featured, nor is it the cheapest, but we certainly think this could be the last vest you ever need.

What you get with the Ballistic blaze vest is a durable, snug-fitting, and quiet vest that won’t encumber your movements.

There’s nothing worse than trying to get a shot lined up only to have your safety orange vest get in the way, or worse yet, make noise as you move and scare off that deer or elk. Some vests can fit loosely and get in the way, but you’ll barely even notice you’re wearing this bad boy.

Aside from its fit, you get a few zippered pockets, an adjustable waist, a magnetic closure for quick removal, and a durable water repellent DWR finish that won’t wet out. You don’t get shotgun shell holders, a game pouch, or a license tag holder, but its fit and functionality crowned it the best orange vest of 2024 in our eyes.

If you want a few more bells and whistles than Sitka offers here, check out the Primos Gunhunter’s vest immediately below.

  • Pros: Great fit, zippered and handwarmer pockets, quiet, warm, durable
  • Cons: Expensive, not a ton of storage

Feature-Rich Runner Up Primos Gunhunter’s

Primos Gunhunter

If you’re looking for the most full-featured orange hunting vest on the market today, the Gunhunter’s from Primos might rank above all others.

Designed for rifle and muzzleloader hunters, you’ll find yourself equally prepared for both big game hunting and small game hunts alike. That’s because Primos included just about every imaginable loop or pocket you need for organizing your gear. With shotgun shell loops, large pockets to store binoculars, a PVC waterproof lining, and many more helpful features, the Primos Gunhunter’s vest will ensure you’re always ready for action.

This vest doesn’t feature a blood-proof game pouch, but if you want something designed specifically for small game like birds and rabbits, the Gamehide Switchgrass below fits the bill. Some hunters also think this vest fits a bit wide, so make sure you’re ordering the correct size, or consider the Ballistic from Sitka above for a more snug fit.

In all, we think this is one of the best blaze hunting vests money can buy, and if you require lots of storage, it’ll probably be the best option for you.

  • Pros: Tons of storage, well designed, warm, lining pulls down to create a waterproof seat
  • Cons: A bit wide for some, button closures not ideal for everyone, not proper small-game pouch

Our Favorite Full-Zip Safety Vest Under Armour Hunt Blaze

Not everyone wants a thousand pockets to store their stuff like you’ll find in the Primos Gunhunter’s vest. Some of you want a quiet, lightweight option that’ll fulfill your legal requirement and won’t get in the way. Check out the Under Armour Hunt Blaze vest if you’re in that camp.

We love the full-length zipper that keeps it snug, secure, and easy to remove. Its snap dump pockets are also helpful and will keep all your high-use gear close at hand. And, with pass-through hand pockets, you’ll be able to reach through the vest into your jacket pockets to grab whatever you need.

In short, the UA Hunt Blaze vest is a well-designed piece of clothing that’ll keep you safe and legal during big game rifle season. To complete the UA blaze orange combination, pair it with this hat.

  • Pros: Durable, lightweight, quiet, pass-through pockets are a great addition, relatively inexpensive
  • Cons: Not a lot of storage

Orange Camo for Big Game Mountain Pass Extreme Big Game

Depending on where you live, you may be able to wear orange camo to fulfill your legal requirement. While it won’t be legal in some areas, this Mountain Pass garment makes for an excellent deer, elk, and moose vest for those states which allow orange camo.

That includes rifle shell loops, a large kangaroo pouch to hold bigger items, handwarmer pockets, and zippered vertical pockets to hold valuables that you can’t afford to lose. Some hunters say this vest appears to reflect UV light, which could alert deer to your presence. Aside from that, we haven’t noticed any other downsides. If you want to avoid any chance of a deer seeing the reflected UV light from this jacket, consider the Gunhunter’s from Primos above.

  • Pros: Tons of pockets, hand warmer pouch is great, front zipper makes it easy to take on and off, ammo pockets

Our Choice for Reversible Orange TrailCrest

TrailCrest reversible hunting safety top

Are you averse to orange hunting clothes that are only useful in rifle season? If so, give TrailCrest’s reversible camo and blaze orange vest a close look.

With a full-zip front, you can easily remove this vest and reverse between camo and blaze orange as the seasons and legal requirements change. We also love this vest’s heavy-duty fleece lining, which will help you hunt into the late seasons without freezing your butt off.

That fleece material, while extremely warm, is also very quiet and won’t spook animals as you trudge through the forest looking for your next freezer filler. And, for you out there that want their gear to serve multiple purposes, the camo print is very effective, and the orange on the other side is bright and durable.

Though we love this vest, we wish it had zippered hand pockets. Other than that, we can’t find anything else to nitpick.

What We Considered When Analyzing Orange Hunting Vests

There’s a lot to consider when picking our your next orange hunting vest

Like all other products in the world of hunting gear, not all vests are created equal. So, we kept our eyes on a few specific factors to ensure that we indeed have found the best of the best.

Here’s are five of the most important considerations we analyzed when making our choices.

Fit

Maybe the most important factor we considered is how the vest will fit a hunter. Floppy, ill-fitting vests are uncomfortable and will get in your way, so the product you’re after should fit snugly over your clothing and make you easy to see. Simple as that.

Materials

A vest’s materials can make or break its effectiveness in the harsh conditions of late-season hunting. For this reason, we require that all vests on this list utilize durable materials that stay quiet as you move about the field. They should also avoid snags, help protect you from the elements, and have a bright orange finish.

Warmth

Some, but not all of the vests on this list, are made with insulating materials, like fleece to help keep you warm in the late season. Some also utilize GORE-TEX to help repel water and block harsh winds, too.

If you want your vest to help keep you warm, we recommend the Sitka Stratus Windstopper above all others.

Hunting Styles

Each of the best orange hunting vests we’ve recommended has features that fulfill specific needs. For example, the Mountain Pass Extreme Big Game vest has rifle shell holders and an elastic shooting stick holder. If you’re upland or waterfowl hunting, the Gamehide Switchgrass vest has shotgun shell holders that make for a great addition to the garment.

All styles are welcome here, and it was our goal to include something for everybody, even the kids and dogs among us.

Organization

We wanted to ensure that all our fellow gear heads out there had various features to choose from when it came to organizing their gear inside their orange vest. If you use your vest to carry a rangefinder, binos, shooting sticks, or more, we wanted to include an array of products that can help you organize it all.

Which Orange Hunting Vest Will Keep You Safe (& Legal) in 2024?

A hunter wearing a camo jacket and an orange safety vest facing away from the camera
Orange vests are a legal requirement in many states during rifle season

Whether you’re hunting big game like deer and elk or upland hunting for small game, you need one of 2024’s best orange hunting vests to fit well, remain quiet, stay legal, and not give your position away.

Aside from these basic requirements, we made sure to include products with features that’ll elevate your hunting experience, no matter what you’re after. Whether your future vest has the warmth and insulation of fleece, sports tons of practical pockets, or is reversible with camo, we hope we have helped you find the perfect fit.

And, though many of the vests we feature are made for big game hunters, we also made sure to include 2024’s best upland orange hunting vest with a blood-proof game pouch in the back. So, whether you’re after deer, elk, duck, quail, or whatever else, there’s likely a rough-and-tumble piece of gear for you on this list.

Regardless of what you’re hunting or which brand you prefer, we hope you get your hands on one of 2024’s best orange hunting vests to help keep you legal, highly visible, and well-organized in the field.

Boat Cover Material…Which One Is Best?

0

The answer is . . .

What boat cover material you use depends on what type of boat cover you are building, where you are living, and how you plan to use that cover. Remember that your boat cover material is the only thing between your boat and the weather!

Below you will find . . .

  • The fabrics we offer in our store.
  • A list of the most common boat cover fabrics and their attributes to help you decide what is important to you.
  • Some of our favorite fabrics listed at the bottom of this page.

Add vents to your boat cover to help the boat stay dryer inside!

The faster that air can be released from your boat cover, the dryer the boat cover fabric will stay on the inside. The dryer the boat stays, the less likelihood of mildew growth beneath the cover.

Our Fabrics

Check out more examples of Our work!Click Here!

  • All boat cover materials are considered mildew and UV resistant.
  • Some materials listed below are available as boat covers sold in stores and online. There are many more that are not listed. We mention these because they are the more popular boat cover materials available.
  • Here at our shop, we are firm believers in using materials with a minimum of a 5 year warranty.
  • We think saving a few bucks on boat cover fabric isn’t a deal at all if the boat cover ultimately fails early. However, we do understand budget plays a part in your decision.

Most Common Boat Cover Fabrics and their Attributes

Acrylic boat fabrics

This group of boat cover fabrics is considered a top line choice for boat covers.

The are top line because of their ability to last for years and still look good!

  • Sunbrella – 10 year limited warranty – The most popular acrylic in America.
  • Tempotest – 10 year limited warranty – This acrylic is from Italy and uses Teflon Extreme finishing giving double protection from water and oil stains. Also treated with Hi-Clean giving it an impenetrable barrier.
  • Recacril– 10 year limited warranty – Gaining popularity as a fine acrylic boat fabric.
  • Outdura – 5 year limited warranty – Also gaining popularity as a fine acrylic.
  • Dickson– 10 year limited warranty – A fine acrylic, and very popular in Europe.
  • Sundowner – 10 year limited warranty- Made in Spain, not readily available in the US yet.

Best Uses: Storage covers, tops

Strengths: Breathable, beautiful, UV resistant, solution dyed, colorfast, clean-ability and mildew resistant. Available in a huge variety of colors.

Weaknesses: Higher price, abrasion resistance is a little weak and lighter colors soil easily. Acrylic boat fabrics need to be carefully reinforced. Not waterproof and will eventually need to be waterproofed again.

Specialty Sunbrella Fabric Product

  • Sunbrella Seamark – An acrylic that is bonded to vinyl. Has a 5 year limited warranty and is 100% waterproof.

Seamark fabric starts its life as Sunbrella, is purchased by the Haartz Company, and is coated with a vinyl backing.

Seamark is popular with Sea Ray for their bimini and camper tops.

Seamark is an expensive fabric, but desirable for two main reasons. It is 100% waterproof and a perfect match for Sunbrella.

This means you can use it as a waterproof fabric for your bimini and camper tops, and switch back to matching Sunbrella for the enclosures and canvas on the rest of your boat.

Polyester Boat Fabrics

There are some substantial differences among polyester boat cover material. So for that reason we group the polyesters into three groups . . .

Group 1 – Coated polyesters

This first group has appearance similarities.

Polyester boat cover material is often used for store bought and online boat covers.

Retail manufacturers may have their own brands of coated polyester fabrics and they are generally not available in the aftermarket.

So when buying an online boat cover, look at the warranty to see how they stand behind their fabrics. This will be very important in judging the quality of the boat fabric.

  • Aqualon – 5 year limited warranty
  • Aqualon Edge – 7 year limited warranty – New in 2016, has superior heat reflection and heat reduction beneath the cover. It’s Perfecta Marine technology makes it 30% cooler than other fabrics. We are very excited about this fabric and the heat reduction characteristics.
  • Aqualon Edge SOFT – 7 year limited warranty – This new fabric is really making waves with its Perfecta Marine technology that makes it 30% cooler than other fabrics AND it has a soft, non-woven, fuzzy backing to boot! This backing makes it a great light-weight fabric to use against things such as boat and car covers and other things you want to protect.
  • Harbor Time– 5 year limited warranty
  • Harbor Time Edge – 7 year limited warranty – This fabric is similar to Aqualon Edge, but has a tougher polyester fabric on top. It’s Perfecta Marine technology makes it 30% cooler than other fabrics and it works best for those tougher jobs and industrial applications.
  • Top Gun – 5 year limited warranty

Best Uses – Storage Covers, Tops and Shade fly’s

Strengths: Strong, abrasion resistant, good UV resistance, available with soft liners for delicate surfaces in a mid price range. Easy to work with, looks good, easy to clean, mildew resistant, tough, highly water resistant.

Weaknesses: Possible de-lamination, possible color transfer, stiff in cold climate, low breath ability in coated products , some fading over time. Some crazing over time. (Crazing shows up as thin white lines on the fabric caused by folding or creasing the fabric.)

Group 2 – Vinyl Coated Polyesters and PVCBest Uses – Storage Covers, Tops, Trim for enclosures

This group provides some popular boat cover material choices for the high end group of boaters.

  • Herculite Riviera – 5 year limited warranty
  • Stamoid – 5 year limited warranty. Tough, beautiful, and more expensive.

Strengths: Very easy to clean, cool to the touch in very hot weather, tough. Very long lasting, waterproof, excellent clean-ability, high UV resistance, and dimensional stability. Done right it makes a beautiful boat cover.

Weaknesses: Not Breathable, stiff in cold weather, and higher cost.

A little more difficult to fabricate with due to the lack of stretch (can show more wrinkles depending on the skill of the fabricator).

Group – 3 Solution dyed Polyesters

This boat cover material belongs to a new generation of polyesters.

Top Notch – Heavier than Sunbrella, but looks nearly the same. Extremely tough and abrasion resistant. Makes a great travel cover. Not for home sewing machines. 8 year warranty.

Surlast – 3 year limited warranty – Popular 3 year polyester for manufactured boat covers.

Strengths : All group 3 fabrics are strong, UV stable, dimensionally stable, attractive, breathable, highly water resistant, and make beautiful long lasting covers.

Weaknesses: Even with the improvements in longevity, they still don’t outlast the acrylics.

Nylon as a boat cover Material?

Nylon doesn’t hold up well in the sun, so the answer is no, unless you get it for free and make it for free. Don’t waste your money!

Do we have a favorite Boat Cover Fabric?

Yes we do….and of course this is just our opinion!

We like any type of Acrylic such as: Tempotest and Sunbrella. Nothing beat an acrylic for longevity. Blacks, blues and greens outlast other colors in the acrylics.

We also like:

  • Aqualon Edge- 7 year polyester, because it stays 30% cooler than all the rest, even in dark colors.
  • Harbor Time Edge 7 year polyester- when you need a heavy weight polyester that stays 30% cooler.

These are also awesome fabrics:

  • Riviera – 5 year
  • Stamoid – 5 year

These are exceptionally long lasting boat cover materials and so easy to clean. If you use these fabrics, you should have a fabricator whose skill level is fairly high; this type of fabric requires a little more expertise to obtain that high end look we all love.

How To Choose A Good Rifle Name

When it comes to firearms, choosing the right name for your rifle can be a deeply personal and meaningful process. A good rifle name goes beyond mere identification; it becomes an integral part of the rifle’s identity. As enthusiasts, we understand the significance of finding a name that reflects the essence and character of your firearm, creating a connection that goes beyond the physical. In this article, we will explore the art of choosing a good rifle name and provide you with insights and guidelines to assist you in this creative endeavor.

Understanding the Purpose

Before diving into the world of rifle names, it is essential to understand the purpose behind your firearm. Is it a hunting rifle, a target shooting rifle, or a self-defense firearm? Recognizing the role of your rifle will help you determine the direction for naming. Each purpose carries distinct connotations and emotions, which can be effectively conveyed through the right name. Take a moment to reflect on the intended use and the feelings you want your rifle to evoke.

Reflecting the Rifle’s Characteristics

Every rifle possesses its own unique set of characteristics, which can range from power and precision to elegance and craftsmanship. By analyzing these attributes, you can narrow down the qualities you wish to highlight in the name. For example, if your rifle is known for its exceptional accuracy, a name that signifies precision and focus would be fitting. Consider the materials, design, and performance of your firearm, and let these elements guide you in choosing a name that accurately reflects its essence.

Drawing Inspiration

Inspiration for rifle names can be found in a multitude of sources. History offers a treasure trove of ideas, with significant events, legendary figures, and iconic battles providing a rich tapestry of possibilities. Literature and mythology are also excellent sources, offering names that carry deep symbolism and cultural significance. Delve into these realms, exploring stories, legends, and epics to discover names that resonate with your rifle’s identity. By drawing inspiration from the past, you can infuse your firearm with a sense of heritage and significance.

Considering Personal Preference

Ultimately, the decision of a rifle name rests with you as the owner. Consider your personal preferences and style when choosing a name. Does a classic and timeless name appeal to you, or are you drawn to more modern and innovative choices? Your rifle’s name should reflect your taste and resonate with your own identity. After all, it is a reflection of your connection to the firearm and the story you want to tell.

Engaging Creativity

Naming a rifle is an opportunity to let your creativity soar. Brainstorm a list of potential names, allowing yourself to explore various themes, languages, and concepts. Experiment with wordplay, alliteration, or even combining different words to create a unique and memorable name. Push the boundaries of your imagination and challenge conventional naming conventions. Seeking Feedback

Sometimes, an outside perspective can provide valuable insights and suggestions. Share your list of potential names with fellow firearm enthusiasts or experts, seeking their opinions and feedback. They may offer fresh perspectives or point out nuances that you may have overlooked. Engaging in conversations and discussions can enhance your understanding of how others perceive the names and help you make an informed decision.

Testing the Name

Once you have selected a name that resonates with you, visualize your rifle with its chosen name. Imagine how it will look engraved or inscribed on the firearm. Remington 870 Review: The King of American Shotguns?

0

With Remington’s recent rebirth, we’ve decided to explore one of the kings of American shotguns.

Remington and Mossberg ruled the roost of pump-action shotguns for the longest time now. Remington’s 870 has long been their flagship firearm, and today we are taking more than one for a run.

Remington 870
Remington 870

The Remington 870 Express .410 was my first actual firearm. It was given to me for my 8th birthday, and I remember that evening my dad took me hunting rabbits in the orange groves near our home.

I can still remember toting this lightweight little pump gun as the sunset. It was cold, and while we didn’t get any rabbits that night, it’s still one of my fondest memories.

I’ve clung to that Remington .410 ever since and recently gave it to my own son. I’m certainly a fan of the gun, and I own five different models of the 870, and it’s easily one of my favorite shotguns.

Remington 870 Review at a Glance

Pros

  • Slick and smooth action
  • Incredibly reliable
  • Available in virtually any configuration you could want
  • Available in multiple calibers
  • Rugged steel receiver

Cons

  • Dimpled tubes make mag extensions a pain
  • Factory LOPs are often too long

The Bottom Line

The Remington 870 is an incredibly reliable and well-made shotgun designed to fill any role a shotgun can fill. It’s an awesome option for home defense, deer hunting, upland birds, ducks, small game, clay pigeons, etc. Clearly, the Remington 870 is a top-tier choice if you need a pump shotgun.

Specs & Features

  • Length: 40″
  • Barrel Length: 20″ (14 through 28″ also available)
  • Weight: 7.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 7 Rounds (4 to 6 also available)

  • Raised bead sight
  • Deep blued finish (Wingmaster models)

The 870’s Background

Remington 870 close up

Remington’s king of pump shotguns came to life in 1950, and at the time, it was rather revolutionary.

You see, Remington had the idea to increase the action bars from one to two and patented the concept of dual-action bars on a pump shotgun. Dual-action bars help prevent binds, increase reliability, and result in a super-smooth action.

Remington designed the 870 to compete with the Winchester Model 12, which was considered the king of shotguns in 1950. The 870 proved to be more modern, reliable, and affordable.

The result was a pump-action, bottom loading, side ejecting, tubular magazine-fed shotgun.

There are hundreds of different configurations of this gun, and in 2009 Remington stated over 11 million 870s had been produced. The various configurations include different calibers, finishes, barrel lengths, furniture, and more.

Remington 870 (17)
My collection of Remington 870 shotguns

The most basic models are the Express and Express Tactical. These feature a matte black bead-blasted finish with wood or synthetic furniture and are available in .410, 2- gauge, and 12-gauge.

The Wingmaster represents the company’s premier shotgun, and as the name implies, most Wingmasters are sporting guns. However, I own two tactical variants of the Wingmaster, so they’re not unheard of.

Wingmasters feature a beautiful blued finish and American walnut stocks and are premium-grade guns.

Remington 870 (10)
Remington 870 Express

The Fieldmaster represents Remington’s latest line of shotguns and falls in between the Express and Wingmaster models.

The stock is matte black and reportedly more durable than the express finish. The gun also features improved action bars for a silky-smooth action.

Beyond these three designs, we also have the Special Purpose Marine model, the TAC-14 firearms, the SuperMag, the Police Magnum models, and likely a dozen other models between limited configurations, military models, and distributor exclusives.

Remington 870 (12)
Remington 870 Tac-14

Who Is It For?

The Remington 870 isn’t like the Glock 19. If I say Glock 19, you picture Gaston’s little polymer frame pistol. If I say Remington 870, you could picture many guns, from the military’s MCS to your grandfather’s bird gun.

There is an 870 for everyone who needs a shotgun. I tend to prefer the tactical models and all but my .410 Express model represents various tactical 870s. I have the ONG military model, a retired Police Wingmaster, and two TAC-14s.

Tac
Tac’d Out Tac-14

That’s an excellent example of how versatile the 870 platforms can be. My two Wingmasters can be converted to hunting guns with the swap of a barrel, the removal of the magazine extensions, and the addition of a plug.

Shotguns can be swapped between various configurations with ease and put into various roles in half a heartbeat. Proper ammo selection goes a long way, and shotguns certainly give you many different ammo options.

The Remington 870 can be configured for any roll and for nearly everyone. From kids with .410s to breachers with short PGO 870s.

Fit & Feel

Shooting the Remington 870

I’m a shotgun nerd, and I’ve experienced a variety of different actions — actions from Benelli, Mossberg, Winchester, and more. However, the 870 Wingmaster will always hold a space in my heart.

It has to be the smoothest and slickest action on any pump-action shotgun I’ve handled.

Even the standard Express models are super slick and smooth. You won’t find the grit and slop that shows up in other pump actions. Working a well-honed, well-worn action delivers a tactile experience that’s just plain enjoyable.

It’s so enjoyable that it feels like it should be fattening.

Remington 870 receiver
This and the 870 Wingmaster Action are both right up there in terms of incredible experiences.

It’s hard to express a tactile feeling through text. It slides like it’s on well-worn and oiled ball bearings. The action is so smooth I can work it by rapidly moving the gun back and forth with just my firing hand.

Heck, maybe that’s why Sarah Connor chose the 870 to fight Terminators.

Remington 870
Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor with her Remington 870 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

What I don’t like and never will is the American shotgun maker’s obsession with long lengths of pulls. The first thing you should do for tactical guns is drop the 14.5-inch stock and toss on a Hogue youth or Magpul SGA stock.

If I purchase a Wingmaster or Fieldmaster, I don’t want to remove my American Walnut stock for a polymer one. I’m 6-foot-5-inches, and a 14.5-inch LOP feels ungainly for me. So why is this the standard?

Other than that, I don’t have much to complain about.

Holosun Optics HS507C
Remington 870 receiver

Ergonomically the gun is fine. We get a cross-bolt safety that sits at the rear of the trigger, making it a little less intuitive than desirable.

The pump release sits in front of the trigger and is plenty easy to manipulate. Tossing on a pistol grip stock setup or an AR-like adjustable stock doesn’t create ergonomic issues.

How Does It Shoot?

Remington 870
Shooting the Remington 870

No shotgun gets far without being a solid shooter. Shotgun aficionados have long enjoyed shooting the 870, and it’s easy to see why. I’ve already gushed over the smooth action, but there’s more to it than that.

First, let’s talk all about accuracy. Remington uses either a vent rib or a bead that sits on a platform. This raises the height of the bead and ensures accuracy and a proper point of aim/point of impact.

Remington 870
Remington 870

If the bead sits directly on the barrel, the shotgun will appear to hit high and be difficult to aim in a pinch. A raised bead corrects that issue and makes sure your buckshot hits where your bead sits.

(Rhyme unintentional, but I’ll take it.)

I’ve gotten tight groups with the bead sights with slugs, roughly 2.5 inches at 50 yards with a supported position. They were Federal Vital-Shok and represent what most will hunt with.

Remington offered the famed rifle sights on the barrel, outside of beads, which offer great slug capability. Ghost ring sights are rare on Remington 870s but not unheard of. Sadly, most Remington 870s don’t come optic ready.

Attaching a rail or optic isn’t easy and might require a trip to a gunsmith to properly install.

Remington 870
Holosun HS507C on a Benelli M4…but it will work on an 870!

In regards to recoil, it’s like any other pump-action shotgun. The recoil can be fierce, largely on your load selection. Reduced recoil tactical buckshot won’t leave a bruise, but 1-ounce slugs at 1,600 feet per second might rattle some teeth.

A good push/pull recoil technique can do a fantastic job of mitigating recoil and making the 870 plenty easy to handle. That slick action is more than nice and does make it easy to ensure you can quickly and reliably work the action.

Remington 870
Remington 870 pump

Short stroking shotgun actions happen, but the smoother the action, the less likely you will short stroke the gun.

Regarding total reliability, the 870 eats standard 2.75 and 3-inch shells. It’s not friendly to 1.75-inch mini shells but functions perfectly with 2.5 and 2-inch shells.

What Sets the 870 Apart

If a pump-action shotgun is on your wish list, you should feel good knowing that a quality, basic pump-action shotgun isn’t an expensive weapon.

Remington 870 Review: The King of American Shotguns?
Remington 870

For less than $450, you can get a good pump-action shotgun, but inside of that realm of affordable pump-action, the Remington reigns supreme.

Remington 870s give you the smoothest action, a steel receiver, a reliable design, a great bead sight, and plenty of modularity. It’s a tough-as-nails gun that can easily last you a lifetime.

By the Numbers

Reliability: 5/5

If you make a pump-action shotgun that can’t cycle, I’m unsure what to tell you. The 870 cycles, fires, ejects without complaint and will do so for decades of trouble-free use.

Ergonomics: 4/5

My main complaint on the 870 is Remington’s love of the 14.5-inch length of pull. It’s the first thing I’d change on my Remington guns. Other than that, the Remington 870 features a solid set of perfectly useable controls.

Accuracy: 5/5

The bead on the Remington 870 is properly set up to ensure the proper point of aim and point of impact. Within the range of a smoothbore shotgun, it’s as accurate as it gets.

Customization: 5/5

The Remington 870 is much like a AR 15 in terms of customization. Do whatever you want to it!

Value: 4/5

The Remington 870 isn’t the cheapest pump-action shotgun or even the cheapest American-made pump-action shotgun, but it still represents a good value.

Overall: 4.5/5

The Remington 870’s ruled the roost as one of the two kings of American pump-action shotguns and will continue to do so for many years to come. Heck, it’s outlasted Remington’s own attempts to release a newer pump-action shotgun.

Must-Have Remington 870 Upgrades

Remington 870 Review: The King of American Shotguns?
For home defense or if you might be in the wilderness after dark, a weapon light is a good idea!

There are a ton of options for Remington 870 upgrades on the market. Here are just a few of my favorites:

Magpul SGA Stock

The Magpul SGA is the best shotgun stock on the planet. It’s adjustable for LOP, has sling points, has an optional riser for optics, and is made to last forever. It’s the stock for modern shotguns.

Streamlight TL Racker

Mounting a light and maintaining control of it can be tough with pump-action shotguns.

The Streamlight TL Racker replaces your pump with an integrated light. You get 1,000 lumens of bright white light for target identification with massive ambi controls and full control over the light and weapon.

Blue Force Gear VCAS Sling

A good sling can take you far, and the Vickers Combat Applications Sling is one of the best.

It comes with numerous attachment mechanisms making it easy to toss onto a shotgun like the 870. The VCAS is a quick-adjust two-point design that makes weapon retention a snap.

Mesa Tactical SureShell Carrier

Shotguns don’t have a lot of ammo in the gun, so keeping some extra ammo on the gun is always smart.

The Mesa Tactical SureShell side saddle is a very well-made design that allows you to keep four spare rounds tied to the gun. Mesa makes high-quality stuff, and they are well known as shotgun people.

Final Verdict

If you have a task requiring a shotgun, then the Remington 870 can get it done in style.

Now that Remington is back up and running, the 870 will likely rise to the top. It’s a stellar option for home defense, hunting, trap shooting, and whatever else you need a shotgun for.

There are a vast array tree stands and other hunting options on the market today (ground blinds, elevated box blinds, etc.). Just as varying are the heights of ladder stands and recommended tree stand height. So the question is, how high does your tree stands actually need to be?

This can be a complicated topic simply because there is no right answer for every scenario. However, there are several things to consider that will help you make the best choice for your hunting location.

First of all, the type of tree you intend to hunt out of plays a big role. If you’re in a grove of pines or cedar trees with low hanging branches, it will likely provide a fair amount of natural cover and you can get away with hanging your tree stand lower. All you have to worry about is making sure there are adequate shooting lanes where you anticipate the deer to be moving.

In a bigger hard woods with trees that might not have many low hanging branches for cover, the higher you can place your tree stand the better. Often times 20 feet is the benchmark. This will get you up high enough to be out of direct line of sight for any deer in the area and is not so high that a hunter feels uncomfortable climbing to and getting into the stand safely.

If you’re using a climber, you are limited based on the shape of the tree. Obviously you cannot climb above any branches with a climbing tree stand, but you also want to take any large knots or other abnormalities of the trunk of the tree into account. They can be obstacles as well.

Personally, the higher the better. I have been in open trees without a low level canopy to provide any sort of concealment and on any given day, a deer might bust you or they might not take notice at all. A lot of this depends on the amount of movement you’re making. That is why I prefer to be up around 25 or 30 feet if at all possible. The further I am from a deer’s line of sight, the better off I am in case I do need to move or make other adjustments. At these heights you will definitely want to consider how you’ll need to compensate for shot angle when shooting, however. A little extra practice from an elevated position will go a long way to help.

Something that I ALWAYS use to ensure my safety is a safety harness system. There are several brands that make products like these and they are all equally sufficient to keep you safe while you’re hanging the stand, climbing into and out of, as well as hunting from it. What you need to know is that a lineman’s belt that can strap to your harness and around the tree will make hanging tree stands incredibly easy and far safer for you.

Once the stand is in place make sure there is a safety strap in the tree that you can secure your harness to while you’re hunting. The final piece to this safety system is a life line. You can purchase these ropes or you can make your own lifelines. Several companies make these rope kits you can purchase that are around 30 feet in length. It is a rope system with a prussic knot that you can slide up and down the rope as you climb. The knot is designed to slide when it supports no weight but catch when weight or force is applied to it, as in the event of a fall. This way you are connected to the tree by some means at all times during your climbs, ensuring the most effective safety measures possible.

Hopefully these tips will help your tree stands be more effective and safe this fall. For more tips and helpful articles like this one, sign up to receive our newsletter. Best of luck to all you hunters. Shoot straight!
