There’s no doubt that Block has dominated the archery target landscape for almost a decade with their innovative compressed foam sheet design that stops bolts and arrows with friction.

When wanting to recommend a 3D target for crossbow hunters out there, I wanted to find something that was going to be relatively affordable, and very durable.
After looking and looking, I chose the Shooter Buck 3D target as the best crossbow 3D target on the market today, and there’s several reasons why!
The Shooter Buck is a great addition to any crossbow enthusiasts shooting range, or for anyone just getting started in the sport. This option is priced really well at just over $100, and it is extremely lightweight for a lifelike option.
Also, in case you really want a 3D target that’s going to let you fire off some broadheads, this one will do the job. Personally, I’m a little hesitant about shooting off a large number of broadheads in targets like this, but if the manufacturer is giving you the sign-off, I would take it.

If you’re looking for a second option to Block, I would take a look at the numerous Black Hole targets available in this block/cube category.

What To Consider When Choosing A Crossbow Target
Type
When looking at the different types of archery targets, you’re going to find that there are a few popular options with each one having their own pros and cons:
1. Cube & Block: A lightweight and easy to move target that’s one of the most popular types on the market. While it does have great stopping power, you’re not going to get that real-life feel like our next option…
2. 3D: The best option if you’re looking to put yourself in a real-life hunting scenario and test yourself against finding those vitals. However, these targets are very large and are the most expensive option on this list.
3. Bag: Similar to the cube and block target, this is going to be a great mobile option and one that’s the most affordable. Of course, these targets do not have the best quality and are going to give out faster when compared to the other options.
4. Decocking: Now, these really isn’t a separate category as decoking targets are cube/block or bag designs, but they do serve a separate purpose. For those that don’t have a decocking crossobw, you might want to bring along a smaller target to release your bolt when you’re done in the woods. To state the obvious, these should not really be used for practice.
Pro Tip: If possible, try to cover your target with a tarp, or move it inside when not using to avoid swelling from rain and wear and tear from the outdoor elements.
Construction
When purchasing a crossbow target, you’re going to want to know what’s inside your target. All in all, most of these targets are going to be constructed of some type of foam – the difference really comes down to the composition of the foam:
1. Cube & Block: Foam sheets that are compressed tightly together.
2. 3D: Foam that’s compressed into a single shape.
3. Bag: Shredded foam and foam strips along with some other miscellaneous material stuffed in a bag.
Size
The size of your archery target is ultimately going to depend on much you value mobility, how long you want the target to last, and the price you’re willing to pay.
Larger targets are going to be more difficult to move, but because of their large surface area and the numerous opportunities to place your arrows, they are going to last much much longer than a smaller option. However, keep in mind, as these targets increase in size you’re going to pay a higher price.
On the other side, if you really value mobility and moving your target from one destination to another, I would recommend going with something like a small cube or bag target. Of course, these might wear out a little quicker, but you do have the advantage of a much cheaper price to counter that negative.
Price
A good crossbow target is going to cost you anywhere between $50 and $200. As you’d expect, 3-D targets are the most expensive just because the size and unique construction of the product.
However, a reliable cube or block target, especially a high-quality one, can run you $150+ depending on the brand.
And one final obvious statement, due to their size and durability, bag targets are going to be the cheapest option available.
What To Avoid When Purchasing A Crossbow Target
The main thing to avoid when purchasing a special crossbow target is single-sided targets that are limited to field points only.
I suggest purchasing a multiple sided target for several different reasons:
1. Firstly, by having multiple sides to shoot at, you extend the life of your target. Shooting at the same side over and over again wears down the target material fast, decreasing the life of your purchase.
2. Secondly, most of these multiple sided targets are going to have numerous bull’s eyes per side. When practicing, and shooting several shots in a single round, you’ll want to avoid shooting at the exact same place – preventing the stacking/breaking of arrows.
3. Lastly, in addition to the looking for a multiple sided target, you’re going to want to make sure you can practice with broadheads, In other words, you want to avoid purchasing a target that can only stop field points. Even though you’re not going to practice with broadheads, it’s nice to know you can take some final shots when zeroing in your crossbow scope.
