Kansas Hunting Seasons

Hunting enthusiasts may choose from a wide variety of activities in Kansas. Whitetail and mule deer populations are strong in this state, and permits are distributed based on a draw system. Due to the 27 distinct duck species, duck hunting is especially popular in December and January. Since Kansas has nine different waterfowl subspecies, goose hunting is also quite common. Popular game birds include pheasants and bobwhite quail, and turkeys have two shooting seasons-spring and fall.

There are several other game species as well, including Sandhill Cranes, Crows, Woodcocks, Snipes, Doves, Greater Prairie Chickens, Mergansers, Coots, Rails, Teal, Bull Frogs, and Antelope. For more extensive information on specific species and hunting dates, hunters can refer below to the entire list of Kansas hunting seasons for 2024-2024.

Turkey Season Update 2024

Due to worries over diminishing bird populations, Kansas cancelled its fall turkey hunting season for 2024. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Commission cited 15 years of turkey population decreases for its conclusion. The 2022 autumn turkey harvest was projected to be fewer than 500 birds, since the fall season increases turkey mortality, particularly hens. To restore turkey populations, the state has shortened the autumn season and reduced harvest limits. Other Midwest and Southeast states have seen turkey numbers decline.
