What Caliber Rifle Do I Need for Hunting Bison?
Hunting Bison requires a powerful caliber firearm and a heavy load. That’s because of the bison’s enormous size and strength, and they are among the most dangerous animals to hunt. Here’s why. Bison:
- Typically, bulls can weigh between 1,000 to 2,200 pounds, cows between 800 to 1,200 pounds;
- Despite their size, Bison are fast, running up to 35 mph, and they’re agile and able to change direction rapidly;
- have enormous bulk, so smaller calibers may not penetrate to the vital organs; and
- are unpredictable when threatened and especially when wounded and may charge you.
So you want to use your biggest caliber weapon with the heaviest cartridge to maximize the probability of taking a Bison down when you hit it. Here are a few suggested Calibers for Bison Hunting include:
