To some extent, the history of the United States is connected with the development of weapons. Starting from colonization and ending with modern wars, weapons influenced the progress of science and production. They gave impetus to the country’s story and the emergence of new technologies and materials. Every critical period in US history has been associated with the advent of a new type of weapon. It should be noted that armament directly forms the image and perception of the country by other states. Our article will highlight the most iconic moments in the history of the development of American weapons and publish a ranking of the most popular pistols and shotguns in the United States.
General history of American weapons.
The roots of American weapons are steeped in the history of the conquest of the lands of North America with the help of a European shotgun with a muzzle like a funnel and a musket with a fuse. The guns guaranteed every settlement’s survival, security, and food supply. It can be said that the colonization of America would have been impossible without firearms. Although, at first, the Americans copied the French .69 caliber musket by 1795. they upgraded the weapon with a rounded hammer and slanted bowl.
During the Revolutionary War, George Washington, while still a general, ordered the creation of the Springfield Armory, which later began to manufacture muskets. This 1795 model was put into serial production and served until the Mexican War. During this same period, Congress established the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal in West Virginia to stockpile munitions and manufacture weapons. Thus, a weapons base was laid, which ensured the country’s superiority on the battlefield and became the guarantor of independence.
A big plus for the industry was that the state did not monopolize the development of new types of weapons but allowed the most gifted artisans and entrepreneurs to contribute to the weapons business. They received government orders and could improve their offspring.
Eliphalet Remington was one of the first to put the manufacture of flintlocks on a grand scale. Over 206 years of work, he turned a small workshop into a weapons empire with the most legendary weapons in history. Among the outstanding specimens, the Remington 870 and its modifications are worth highlighting. Based on it, options appeared for law enforcement agencies, hunters, athletes, or property protection. Reliability, smooth operation, and comfortable ergonomics have made it the best-selling weapon in the world.
Remington was not the only supplier for the state. In addition to him, Henry Derringer and Eli Whitney supplied flintlock rifles to the army. Henry later became famous as a master of concealed carry pistols, and Eli was not a professional. He laid the foundation for the cost of weapons and popularized the idea of interchangeable parts.
The National Arsenal released the first weapon with interchangeable parts. Its feature was a shock ignition system and a significant batch of 275 thousand units. Parallel to this, the Model 1841 was produced, in .54 calibers, with a 33-inch barrel, without bayonet attachment. It was designed for rifle regiments and worked well in the Mexican War.
In 1855 Minister J. Davis initiated the mass production of the first .58 caliber rifled musket for the army. An innovation was the introduction of a roll of primers in the lock compartment, which was sequentially fed when the weapon was cocked. This idea was continued in 1936 when Samuel Colt released a pistol with a self-loading firing system. In addition, he introduced a method for stamping hull parts in molds, which made it possible to establish mass production and significantly reduce the cost. Colt became the father of the .45 caliber Army revolver, which was used by the army and the National Guard until the early 20th century. He received patents for a gun, shotgun, and rifle, becoming a monopoly in his niche. Everyone used the Colt revolver, from the army to gold miners and farmers. His name became a household name for the pistol, and the saucy slogan of his advertising company, “God made man, and Sam Colt made them equal,” formed the foundation of American gun culture.
In addition to the revolver, the 1888 rifle and the 1884 carbine, caliber .45, were popular. During the Spanish-American War, they were supplanted by the Krag-Jorgensen model 1896 carbine. It was improved, and the cavalry in the Philippine Islands used the following 1898 and 1899 models.
After 1850, Colt’s patent expired, and Smith and Wesson came to grips with the release of revolver-type weapons. They introduced a tilting system to the side of the drum to extract and load cartridges. This made it possible to speed up weapons reloading and make them significantly more competitive. The next hundred years practically did not change the design of the revolver.
But the restless minds of gunsmiths could not sit idle and decided to double the power of weapons by using not one barrel but two on one bed. So there were double-barreled guns. Burnside, Maynard, and Sharps packed gunpowder and bullet into one cartridge that was water resistant. Cartridges began to be loaded from the back of the muzzle without using a ramrod and a wad, which revolutionized the army’s rate of fire and combat effectiveness.
During the Civil War, another fundamentally new way of storing and feeding ammunition into a pistol was invented. The idea of holding cartridges in the pistol grip and not in the drum belongs to Spencer Gun. Each cartridge was fed mechanically, one at a time, but allowed several shots to be fired in a row. One of the famous owners of the Spencer pistol was Abraham Lincoln, and you will agree that he chose the best possible.
Benjamin Henry improved Hahn’s design and received a patent for it. Benji’s rifles served faithfully throughout the Civil War and became a meme of the time. There were jokes about his rifle being loaded on Sunday and fired all week.
The idea of fast reloading was in the air and haunted John Browning. In 1883 he designed the revolutionary pump action shotgun for the Winchester Company. Despite almost 140 years of design history, pump action shotguns still have their ardent fans. A little later, in 1817, John released the Browning M1918 portable light machine gun, chambered in .30-06 Springfield. Browning was exceptionally talented and received 128 gun patents. The most famous was a patent for an automatic method of loading weapons. The ejection energy from the departing bullet began to be used to eject the cartridge case and reload without manual control. The Browning rifle, the M1911 pistol, and the .50 caliber M2 machine gun are among his most famous creations. All of them, at one time, were in service with the US Army and received the most enthusiastic reviews among professional weapon users.
Undergoing minor modifications, these models participated in the Vietnam Company, World War II, and the Korean War.
Progress did not stand still, and by the new era of warfare, the US Army received a light submachine gun from John Thompson. It was the first portable, fully automatic, a light weapon that can be considered the first machine gun. Colt produced the pistol under the name M1921. It had two versions of the magazine: a box-type magazine for 20 and 30 rounds and a drum magazine for 50 and 100 games. In 1918 Marines landed on the coast of Honduras armed with Tommy pistols. In addition, Tommy appeared in the Banana Wars and the Chinese Civil War.
Interestingly, the machine has received a series of nicknames: Tommy Gun, Trench Broom, Chicago Piano, or The Thompson. From the handles, it is clear that he liked the army, the police, and the criminals. Most of the gangsters of that time preferred him. Bonnie and Clyde were robbing banks, brandishing .45 Thompson rifles. Thus, it is not just a weapon but a milestone in history, pop culture, and literature.
At the moment, the most common weapon of the US Army is the 5.56 mm M16 (Rifle) rifle and its modifications from the Colt company. The circulation has exceeded 8 million units, and the M16 is in service with all US military branches.

Reliable operation in the most adverse conditions, great stopping power, accuracy, excellent ergonomics, and a large magazine are everything one can only dream of. His goal was to get a universal pistol, equally effective for the army’s unique services and needs. The officers wanted to increase the stopping power of the Beretta M9, get a built-in Picatinny rail, and the ability to install a silencer. The gunsmiths did a great job reloading the HK45 with the .45 ACP round, adding some exciting details. For example, a very comfortable handle with an interchangeable part. Although the Remington 870 was initially positioned as a hunting rifle, in 1966, the army adopted an improved model, police, and the FBI.
Among the features, we note the manufacture of parts from a single piece of high-quality steel. This made the gun phenomenally durable and virtually unkillable in the most unstable weather conditions. In addition to options with a single barrel, there are also double-barreled ones—multiple modifications allowed to expand the list of ammunition. There are 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauges among them. The derailleur bullpup system works equally well for right or left-hand dominant people. The stock is equipped with a soft butt pad that softens the recoil. And, of course, without the Picotinni bar, it is difficult to imagine a modern weapon. So, it is possible to hang various day and night optics. As conceived by the designer, it was supposed to cover the needs of the army, police, and special forces as an assault rifle. Under the name M16, it is still the primary type of small arm of the US Army. It was distinguished by low weight, rate of fire, reduced recoil force, two modes of use (automatic and semi-automatic), increased penetrating power, and exceptional accuracy. The company faced financial problems and brought the AR-15 to the civilian market. Naturally, several changes were made, designed for practical use. The design received a more modest caliber of cartridges and a reduced magazine. By reducing the weight of the cartridges, the initial speed increased, which led to an increase in lethal force and the distance of destruction. These qualities attracted the attention of big game hunters throughout the country. In addition, it began to be used for self-defense and protection. The general excitement was fueled by a ban on using more than 15 rounds in the store.
Increased demand contributed to the fact that, in addition to Colt, Daniel Defense, Barrett Firearms, ArmaLite, Smith & Wesson, ArmaLite, Bushmaster Firearms International, and a dozen other foreign companies took up the production of AR-15. It is worth noting that the same weapon has subtle differences and many Americans prefer the AR-15 from a particular manufacturer. So, for example, the rifle from Bushmaster, in the Predator model, is very much appreciated by many hunters. We understand the AR-15 for its versatility. It is excellent for multi-purpose use.
