Colorado Moose Hunting

Available Colorado Moose Hunts – Search HF Aventures

Moose are far and away the brightest spot for Colorado over the last 10 years. Somehow, Colorado has managed to build a tremendous population of moose when neighbors to the north have been battling to slow the decline and continue to reduce permits and non-resident opportunities. Moose numbers continue to increase, and more and more non-resident hunting opportunities are popping up all the time. This is largely due to a combination of sound management strategies, prime habitat, and hunter conservation/support. The elephant in the room is the forced supplementation of wolves into Colorado that is nearing its deadline. This has the potential to derail all the hard work and conservation efforts that sportsmen and CPW have put in over the last 40 years. But for now, there is no question which state is #1 for Shiras moose.

Colorado currently has 12 data analysis units statewide with huntable moose populations. Every single one of them is capable of producing 40″+ bulls, with some that will push the 50″ mark each season. Most of these units are higher elevation mountainous basins with big riparian willow and aspen stands in the bottom of the canyons. Pay attention to the unit comments to figure out which units have the type of terrain that will suit your hunting style. Breaking down and hauling a moose out for miles from above 10,000′ can be an overwhelming task for hunters who are not prepared for it.

Colorado Moose Season & Dates

In 2022, the state issued 589 total permits, with 57 of those going to non-residents. The permits were split between 24 bulls and 33 cows. Successful bull moose applicants have the luxury of hunting all three seasons with their permit. Colorado offers three weapon choices (archery, muzzleloader, and rifle) with varied season dates associated with them. Dates for 2024 are as follows: archery season September 9-30, muzzleloader season September 9-17, and rifle season October 1-14. Successful cow moose applicants are limited to hunting in one season.

Colorado Moose Draw

If Colorado’s moose hunting has a downside, it’s the cost. Since the 2019 price increases, it is now one of the more expensive states to apply for when it comes to out-of-pocket costs, but it is well worth it. If you elect to build a point if unsuccessful in the draw, it will cost you $100. In the end, if you’re looking for a trophy class bull or just the chance to hunt Shiras moose, Colorado’s opportunities are unmatched.
