Benjamin 397 Review

benjamin 397 air rifle parts | scope | sale | review

In 1992, Crosman Corporation, manufacturer of air gun and air gun accessories, brought Benjamin Sheridan in its entirety. Crosman closed the operation in Racine in 1944 and moves the production line to its home location in East Bloomfield, New York. The manufacturing of  Benjamin Model 397 also took place here since that time. Although this rifle has been made for decades, Crosman continues to put extra nice features here and there to keep the classic live up with its name. And you can find out all of them in this detailed review.

Gun Type

The Benjamin 397 is multi-pump pneumatic air gun. The variable pump rifle has a piston and a cylinder inside the chamber. When you cock it, the piston creates high pressure. The high pressure is forced pass the cylinder valve and is stored in the cylinder. When you shoot, the pressure is directed around the valve and up into the chamber . As a result, a pellet is discharged out of the barrel. You can read more about pump pneumatic gun in this post.

The Benjamin 397 has a caliber of .177 (4.5 millimeters). It is break barrel rifle meaning that you have to cock the gun each time you want to shoot. Besides, it is single-shot action so you can shoot only one shot at a time. Single-shot action gun gives control over the type of pellet you gonna shoot. Moreover, one-shot capacity makes you become a more efficient shooter: you know you have to make your shot count because you only have one chance per one loading action.

Crosman MK-177 Review

crosman mk-177 tan tactical air rifle specs

You shoot 500 rounds of pellet in a row in the afternoon

The tin cans blew every where, about a dozen of them shattered in your backyard

Then, a friend called you over for the late party.

Awesome, you went to the party and drink several bottles of beer.

After going home, you felt the rain over your face when walking to your front door, and the cold feeling of the rain reminded you of one thing.

You forgot to left your gun outside and it IS raining!

You prayed that your gun is still safe and sound while rushing towards its place

Thank god it had no damage.

Now,you could breathe again. Phew.

The above story illustrates why we fall in love with synthetic guns that stand vigorously in any kind of weather.

And Crosman MK-177 is one of those guns.

Gun Type

Crosman MK-177 is a multi-pump pneumatic air rifle. It gets power from a piston and a pressure cylinder inside the chamber. When you cock it, you compress the air between the piston and the cylinder. Since the gun is sealed completely, the air has nowhere to go and is forced into the cylinder. The cylinder has a lock valve that let the air in and keep it there until you fire. When you shoot, the pellet is driven out of the barrel due to propellant force of compressed air.

Pump pneumatic air gun is compact, lightweight, recoilless and gives you control over the power of the gun . They are perfect for every shooter, whether you are 10, 30, 50, whether you are male or female, everyone can shoot a multi-pump. If you are young or small and don’t have any muscle power, put just 2 or 3 pumps in the gun and shoot it. If you like high power and have all the muscle required, you can put 10 pumps to get maximum power. You can read more about pros and cons of a pump rifle in this post.

The caliber (the internal diameter of the bore, measured in inches) is .177- the most common caliber for target shooting and plinking. Besides, the barrel is rifled with helical grooves inside the bore that make bullet spin. Spin stabilizes pellet, improves accuracy and enhances shooting range

This gun is double function air rifle: It shoots either BB or pellet and you can use whatever ammo you got at hands. It just doesn’t get any better than a versatile ammo gun. Combine this with the variable number of pumps and you’ve got every man’s air gun.

This all-new, tactical air rifle features new valve technology combining lower pumping force with higher velocity. The newly designed bolt handle is larger and located on the left side for ease of use.

Stock

The stock is a rugged all-weather synthetic. Unlike wood stock which is heavy and easily effected by weather, synthetic stock is lighter and isn’t affected by outside condition. Therefore, it is the best suit for shooters who live high high humidity place and for gunners who don’t want to bother with stock maintenance.

The stock has slight raised cheekpiece and slightly textured plastic in the grip so you can grasp this gun more tightly and line up the sight faster. Moreover, this gun has a tactical pistol grip : it orients the hand in the vertical way similar to the position one would take with a conventional pistol. Pistol grip provides comfortable feel and allows you to maneuver the gun easily.

The stock has removable rubber buttplate so you can store ammo in the handy space beneath the recoil pad

Ammo

The Crosman MK-177 uses both .177 BBs and .177 pellets as its sources of ammunition. BB is surprisingly cheap: you can buy thousand rounds of premium BBs for just few bucks. .177 pellets is inexpensive ,too. If you look at the price of .177 versus .22 pellet, you’ll see that you get twice the amount of ammo with .177 pellet for the same price . Having 2 cheapest ammo at your disposal prevents you from worrying about breaking the bank if you practice shooting a lot.

Cocking and Loading

crosman mk-177 tan tactical air rifle | crosman mk-177 tan tactical air rifle review

The funny thing about this gun is the placement of the cocking bolt on the left side while the magazine must be inserted and indexed from the right side (as opposed to Crosman M4-177 which place both of them conveniently on the right), but it’s not that big of a deal when you get used to it.

Sight

crosman mk-177 tan tactical air gun | crosman mk-177 tan tactical air gun review

The Crosman MK-177 comes with a outstanding open sight. The sight consists of a post front sight and dual aperture rearsight. The aperture sight (a.k.a peep sight) is similar to the iron sight except it has a small hole cutting through the middle of the rear sight. When aiming, shooter  look through the aperture, focus their eyes only on the front sight and the target. The eyes will automatically center the front sight and ensure the accuracy. The picture of front sight and the target is sharp and clear while the surrounding of the aperture now is only out of focus blur zone. So sometimes aperture sight is also called ghost ring sight. The aperture sight has a significant advantage compared to a factory open sight. With a traditional sight, there are 3 points you have to focus on: the target, the front sight and the rear sight. It’s really hard to focus on 3 points at the same time since they are located at different distances from the eyes. But with the aperture rearsight, there are only 2 points to focus on: the front sight and the target because the eyes automatically focus on these points at the canter of the ring. In conclusion, the aperture sight is fast to pick up, easy to acquire target and optically superior to a traditional open sight.

Velocity, Accuracy and Power

crosman mk-177 tan tactical air rifle accuracy | accessories

This multi-pump rifle has velocity up to 800 FPS with steel BB and 750 FPS with alloy pellet. This is medium velocity compared to other pellet guns and super-high velocity compared to other BB guns. This type of awe-inspiring speed set this BB/pellet rifle apart from other air guns that also shoot BB on the market.

Chrony test has given us results as follows:For 10 pumps, this Crosman MK-177 delivers 628.7 FPS with Crosman Premiere 7.9 grains pellet, 631.4 FPS with 7 gr RWS pellet, 594.5 FPS with RWS Hobby 7.0 gr, 631 FPS with 6.9 gr RWS, 621 FPS with Crosman Premiere lite, 751 FPS with Crosman SSP pointed pellet 4gr, and 669 FPS with steel BB. Although these velocities a lower than the advertised numbers, this gun still delivers enough knockdown power , about 5- 7 FPE , so it still can drop birds, crows, doves, etc and common plinking objects such as tin can, water bottle, and so on doesn’t stand a chance .

For Crosman MK-177, various shooting tests have been conducted by different shooters with positive results. The common shooting groups are: 1” at 30 feet, 1/2″ to 3/4″ at 20 yards, 1/2″ at 22 feet, 1” at 50 yards, 1.173” at 10 meters with Crosman Premiere lite, 0.839” at 10 meters with Air Arms Falcons 7.33 gr, 0.858” at 10 meters with RWS Hobby, 0.399” at 10 meters with H&N Finale Match Pistol. As you can see this is an undoubtedly accurate air rifle with the shooting range up to 20 yards.

Customer Reviews

There are lots of customer reviews of this multi-pump rifle. In positive reviews, buyers love its solid polymer stock, realistic firearm looking, fantastic accuracy and over-expected power. However, there are some negative reviews about this gun: they don’t like its location of bolt handle and its pellet storage in the buttplate but those are minor issues, though.

Pros

  • Amazing velocity
  • Awesome dual function
  • Cool tactical looking
  • Excellent open sight
  • Great stock
  • Incredible accuracy

Cons

  • Bolt handle locates on the left side makes it awkward to right handed shooters
  • Pumping action takes some time to master
  • Pumping action can be tedious at some point

Price

The price for Crosman Mk-177 is only about 60 dollars. For $59, or even the normal $79 price, it’s the great gun for the money that will bring you tons of fun.

There are couples of different listings on PyramydAir but the listing I found with the lowest price is the best deal you can find on the internet. Also, there is a listing on PyramydAir of the MK-177 with the red dot sight, couples of hundreds of pellet, carry-case, a safety glasses and some spare pellet clips. This listing is only about $100 and I think you should take a look at it if you want an all-in-one-package gun for your kids.

final

Conclusion

The Crosman MK-177 is a good air gun for father and son day at the range. If you looking for something fun to shoot and want that tactical look and feel, definitely take this gun, I’m sure you’ll be very pleased with it.

Crosman M4-177 Review

crosman m4-177 | crosman m4-177 review

The Crosman M4-177 was first introduced publicly in November, 2011. It got its official name of M4-177 in January, 2012 (before that time it was called the M417). Since its first introduction, it quickly became one of the most popular and sought-after air rifles on the market. Crosman has made this gun as a replica of the M4-Assault rifle with the pumping action to reflect the tactical style air gun shooters are looking for. You will find it easy to fall in love with this cool air rifle at the end of this review.

Gun Type

The Crosman M4-177 is a multi-pump pneumatic air rifle. A multi-stroke air gun has a piston and a pressure cylinder inside the chamber. When you cock the gun, the air between the piston and the cylinder is compressed. It has no where to go and is forced into the cylinder. The cylinder itself has a lock valve that allows the air in, keeps it there and doesn’t let it leak out. When you pull the trigger, you release the pressurized gas and it propels the bullet downrange inside the barrel. All of this happens in a fraction of a second.

crosman m4-177 air rifle

A multi-pump air rifle permits you to have control over the power of the gun. The more you pump, the higher the velocity, the greater the power. The less you pump, the lower the FPS, and the lower the power. This characteristic of a multi-stroke air gun provides you adaptability for short and long range shooting as well as for indoor or outdoor shooting.

A multi-pump air gun is lightweight, compact and recoilless. Most of them have medium power. They are also self-contained with manual pumping action so you don’t have to buy expensive pumping equipment such as CO2 cartridges or scuba tanks like other pneumatic air rifles. The only downside of a pump air gun is the considerable amount of time and effort required for cocking action before each shot. In a hunting situation, your animal target can run away if you don’t hit it with the first shot and are still busy with the pumping action.

The caliber (the internal diameter of the bore, measured in inches) of the Crosman M4-177 is .177 inches or 4.5 millimeters. .177 caliber is the most common caliber of air gun. It uses .177 pellet which often has high velocity, good knockdown power and flat trajectory. To be more specific, flat trajectory makes it easy to zero in the target and effortless to make an accurate shot. .177 pellet also is very cheap so it’s awesome for shooters who want to shoot a lot without worrying about the cost of ammo.
