Gas Piston Archives

Ruger Yukon Review

The design of this air rifle is so sleek and appealing. They say don’t judge the book by its cover but what a wonderful book it is if it has great content and a beautiful cover, hah?

Gun Type

Ruger Yukon is a gas strut air gun. It is powered by ReAxis gas piston technology. Surprisingly, Umarex is the first mainstream air gun manufacturer who actually reverses the direction of the gas ram. They claim that by doing so, you get more power and reliability. We have to see if it works out at the end of this review but first thing first, how ReAxis gas piston works?

Basically, ReAxis stands for Reverse Axis. According to Umarex, unlike the nitrogen-filled gas piston, the ReAxis piston is reverse: meaning the gas strut is turned 180 degrees on its axis so the larger mass of the gas strut pushed the piston instead of the rod, thereby, it generates more power, velocity and impact than other gas pistons.

Benjamin Trail Nitro Piston 2 with Scope Review

Benjamin trail nitro piston 2 air gun | Benjamin trail nitro piston 2 air gun reviews | Benjamin trail nitro piston 2 air rifle | Benjamin trail nitro piston 2 air rifle reviews

Everywhere you turn, you can easily see the buzz around the Benjamin Trail NP2. Crosman has put a lot of effort (and a huge budget, too) into the marketing of Benjamin Trail series which feature Nitro Piston 2 Technology. They promise less cocking effort, less vibration, less cocking force, less noise, crisp trigger and the most important thing: they claim that it hit everything you aim at.

Sound too good to be true? Is it gun overhyped?  In this review, we will take a closer look at the rifle Crosman brags about all over the place.

Gun Type

Benjamin Trail NP2 is powered by all-new Nitro piston technology, generation 2. Check out how the Nitro Piston 2 was made: The way Crosman invents it is they have different stations for building different parts of the NP2 air rifle. Starting with the piston, the first steps in assembling the piston is they put the piston head (or crown) inside of the base, and then they have a rubber bushing on top of that. Then they put on the piston and bolt it down. Next, they move it to another base and they have a neat little tool that put the piston seal for them. After they remove that, they take the real things (or the piston skirt button as we always call them) and they install those and we have assembled piston. Next is the gas ram and put the end cap on. Then they move to the trigger assembly station where the trigger housing comes with the primary seal and predetermine the trigger weight and length of travel.

The Nitro Piston 2 has it all over the original Nitro Piston and almost other gas spring on the market. Most gas spring has the reputation of being hard to cock, but the NP2 put an end to that by reducing the cocking effort up to 10 lbs. According to air gun godfather Tom Gaylord, this is the easiest cocking gas piston he’s ever shot. Moreover, NP2 is 15% faster and doubles the effective shooting range. This gun really over-delivers what you demand of an air gun.

Benjamin Trail NP XL 1500 with scope Review

The Benjamin Trail NP XL 1500 belongs to the beautiful NP XL airgun series . It has the smallest caliber of all (.177, the others are .22 and .25) but also delivers the fastest velocity . Although being made in the .177, you will be surprised when you know that this rifle delivers more than enough knockdown power to deal with pesky pests in your garden.

Gun Type

The Benjamin Trail XL 1500 features Nitro piston technology. A nitro piston gun (or gas-piston) works the same way as the spring gun does, but it has a nitrogen-filled gas ram instead of a coiled spring as the power source.  There is a nitrogen cylinder and a piston inside the chamber. The nitrogen in the cylinder is already held under pressure and you apply more pressure to it when you cock the gun. The pressurized air is kept under tension until you pull the trigger. When you fire, the gas expands and propels the piston forward. The piston comes swiftly after the air transferred port. The compressed air has nowhere to go but behind the pellet since the chamber is sealed completely. As a result, the pellet is discharged from the barrel due to propellant force from compressed air. Read more about pros and cons of nitro piston gun in this popular post .

The caliber (the internal diameter of the bore, measured in inches) is .177 (4.5 millimeter). It’s single shot, break barrel so it means that you can only shoot 1 shot at a time. After first shot, you have to break the barrel down to reload for the second shot. Single shot gun makes you discipline shooter: You have to make your shot count because you have only one chance to hit the target before reloading.

Gun Type

The Benjamin Trail NP is powered by Nitro piston technology. A nitro piston gun (or gas piston) works the same as the spring gun but it has a nitrogen-filled cylinder instead of a metal spring. The air in the cylinder is already compressed and you apply more pressure to it when you cock the gun. The pressurized air is kept under tension until you pull the trigger. When you fire, the pellet is pushed downrange the barrel due to propellant force from compressed air. Nitro piston rifle is lighter and last longer than the spring gun. Besides, it produces less recoil and easier to cock. Furthermore, it can be left cocked for days because there is no spring fatigue. Read more about nitro piston technology in this post to see how it can take your gun sport to the whole new level.

The caliber (the internal diameter of the bore, measured in inches) is .22 (5.5 millimeters.). .22 is the king of hunting and is the go-to caliber for hunters and pest eliminator. Besides, this gun is single-shot, break barrel gun so you can only shoot one shot at a time. After first shot, you have to break the barrel to manually reload the pellet. Benjamin Varmint Powerpack .22 Review

The Benjamin Varmint .22 air rifle has the word “varmint” in its name, implied that the manufacturer was keeping the vision of bring back peace into your property when making the gun that could eliminate those pesky and sneaky critters with ease.

But is it a great gun for the job? Read more to find out.

Gun Type

The Benjamin Varmint Powerpack air rifle is powered by nitro piston technology. A nitro piston gun (or gas piston gun) works the same as the spring gun but it has a nitrogen-filled cylinder instead of a coiled spring. The air in the cylinder is already compressed and you apply more pressure to it when you cock the gun. The pressurized air is kept under tension until you pull the trigger. When you fire, the pellet is propelled downrange the barrel due to the driving force from compressed air. Nitro piston rifle is lighter and lasts longer than the spring gun. Besides, it produces less recoil and easier to cock. Nitro piston has taken the air world by a  storm because it’s a proven technology that takes shooters to a whole new level of shooting experience. If you like smoother-shooting guns that don’t have spring fatigue because you left the gun cocked while waiting for the next critter to cross your path, then a nitro piston rifle is your gun of choice. Read more about it in this post to see how nitro piston technology can make your gun sport more breathtaking.

The barrel has the caliber (the diameter of the bore, measured in inches) of .177 (4.5 millimeter). It has helical grooves inside the bore to make bullet spin. Spin stabilizes pellet, improves accuracy and enhances shooting range.

This gun is a single shot, break barrel air rifle so you can only shoot 1 shot at a time. After first shot, you have to break the barrel to prepare for the second shot. Single-shot gun makes you a better shooter: you have to make your first shot count since you have only 1 chance to hit the target before reloading. Besides, it gives you control over ammunition you gonna shoot and you can find out what pellet works best with your gun in the shortest amount of time.

The barrel is shrouded bull barrel which means that it has a jacket enclosing the barrel and containing the violent release of compressed air from the muzzle. It lets the pellet escape but forces the air to use up as much of its energy before it leaves the shroud, thus reducing the audible report and you will have a quiet gun to enjoy.

Umarex Octane Review

umarex octane air rifle combo review

Nobody wants to be ripped off.

And everyone’s afraid of trying new things.

Understanding customer’s thinking, many air gun manufacturers offer up to 1 year warranty for their rifles.

But not so much manufacturers like Umarex offer a generous 3 years limited warranty

So confidence in their products, I have to say.

And the over-expected warranty is not the only thing I love about the Umarex Octane rifle.

In the next 5 minutes, I’m sure you will nod your head and say ” I see what you mean” after reading this detailed review.

Gun Type

Umarex Octane air rifle a gas ram gun.

According to Umarex, unlike the nitrogen-filled gas piston, the ReAxis piston is reversed: meaning the gas strut is turned 180 degrees on its axis so the larger mass of the gas strut pushes the piston instead of the rod, thereby, it generates more power, velocity and impact than other gas pistons.

Now we know what ReAxis gas ram is, let’s take a look at its benefits over spring piston. First, you have smoother cocking since it doesn’t have spring torque like metal spring. Second, there is no spring fatigue even if you leave it cocked for hours so you don’t have to worry about the piston wear out over time. Third, ReAxis gas piston is not affected by weather. With the springer, the main spring is lubricated with grease so it becomes harder and tougher when the weather gets cold. ReAxis strut doesn’t have this problem and it functions perfectly in different types of weather. Fourth, ReAxis gas ram allows you to have smoother shooting experience with less recoil compared to spring piston. And finally, it lasts longer than metal spring. In the air gun world it is not uncommon to make spring compression over its standard threshold. This weakens the spring and shortens its life span. However, ReAxis gas piston doesn’t care about compression so you can enjoy long-time shooting with it.

Gamo Silent Stalker Whisper IGT Review

gamo silent stalker whisper igt air rifle | gamo silent stalker whisper igt air rifle review | gamo silent stalker whisper igt air rifle stock

We all hate stalkers.

Those who eat our food, live in our houses and leave trails that they were there for us to know.

Or those who sneak in our instagrams to see our photo, dig in our facebook profile and read every line of our tweets.

But in the hunting field, we want to be a stalker.

We want silence and stealth.

Because the worst thing is your prey run off right after you miss the first shot with the more-than-necessary sound.

And there is the gun named silent stalker

Cool!

Join me in this special review to see if this gun deserves that catchy name that sparks lots of curiosity (and excitement, too!)

Gun Type

The Gamo Silent Stalker Bull Whisper is powered by Inert Gas Technology (IGT). Gamo, not to be outdone by other air gun manufacturers, has made their own gas piston technology – IGT. While a spring-piston gun has tar and lube on the metal spring, the grease thickens when the temperature goes really low, a gas piston, on the other hand, needs no lube. Therefore, it won’t have any of the problems experienced by springers. Moreover, IGT gun has no spring torque, no spring fatigue even when you left it cocked for hours, and gives you smoother cocking . Finally, since there is no spring vibration when shooting, IGT rifle gives you smoother shooting and last longer than spring gun.

This gun is a single-shot break barrel rifle so it means that you can only shoot 1 shot at a time. After that, you have to reload the pellet manually for the next shot. Single-shot gun teaches you how to become better shooter: you know you have to make your first shot count because you have only one chance to hit the target before reloading for the second shot.

The barrel is rifled with helical grooves inside the bore to make a pellet spin. Spin makes pellet stable, improves accuracy and enhances shooting range. Moreover, Gamo Silent Stalker features ND52 – noise dampener technology that permanently fits on the muzzle and decreases the audible sound by 52% over the standard spring rifle. Having this amazing silencer on your rifle gives you lots of benefits: First, your hunting dog is less likely affected by noise. Second, it reduces recoil and muzzle blast. Third, it protects shooter hearing ability. And finally, it keeps sensitive neighbors happy while plinking in the backyard and will not disturb your shooting fellows in the range.

Gamo Bone Collector Bull Whisper IGT Review

Remember the “Bone Collector” movie?

When I heard that there is a gun named Bone Collector, I though that Angelina Jolie has switched her hobby from child-raising and charity to shooting sport.

Actually, she hasn’t.

In fact, the Bone Collector is designed in collaboration with Micheal Waddel and Travis “T Bone” Turner of the Bone Collector TV series. The series portraits the culture of hunters and the brotherhood of sportsmen. Therefore, it is no surprise when the gun is built on a forest theme: a special hunter green, composite stock with dark grey rubber grip insert. And the cool Bone Collector logo is prominently shown on the synthetic, high-grade stock. Gamo really knows how to catch our attention!

Crosman Vantage NP comes with traditional open sight which is elevated to satisfy the most picky shooters: The front sight is a fiber optic sight that uses optical fiber for the dot so that it’s brighter than the dark surrounding. The rear sight is fiber optic sight, too, and it is fully adjustable for windage (allow you to adjust the sight left and right) and for elevation (allow you to adjust the sight up and down). Fiber optic sight gives you huge advantage in low-light condition and it provides faster target acquisition in normal circumstances.

Velocity. Power and Accuracy

This air rifle boasts the velocity up to 1200 FPS, which makes this rifle belong to the magnum class of air gun. Since the speed of sound is about 1100 FPS (vary with altitude and temperature), you can hear the loud crack if you use lightweight projectile when shooting due to the super-fast pellet breaks the sound barrier.

Chrony tests give us the following results: This nitro piston rifle delivers 930 FPS and 15.18 FPE with Crosman Premiere Hollow Point pellet 7.9 grains. Although it’s not near the stated number of manufacturer, it stills gives you more than enough knock down power to take care of birds, starling, squirrels, etc.

For Crosman Vantage NP, various shootings tests have been conducted by different shooters with positive results. The common shooting groups are 1-2” at 30 yards, dime size at 40 feet, 1” at 30 yards, less than 1” at 25 yards, 3/4″ at 20 yards, 1/2″ to 1 1/2″ at 35 feet and 1.5” at 50 feet. As you can see, this gun is a tack driver up to 30 yards.
